The Second Word of the Shahadah — أنَّ
1. Meaning
The second word is أنَّ (anna).
It is a small but very important word in Arabic.
Here it means: “that”.
So when you say it in the Shahadah, it connects the first part (I bear witness) with what comes next (that there is no god but Allah).
2. Reading the Word
Let’s sound it out:
- أ = a (like the a in apple).
- نَّ = nna (the letter ن with a shaddah, so you hold the n sound a little longer).
Together → anna → أنَّ
3. Writing the Word (by hand)
The word أنَّ has only two letters:
- أ → (a) the first letter, stands alone.
- ن → (n) but here it has a shaddah ( ّ ), which doubles the sound.
So together they look like this:
أنَّ
4. Typing the Word (on computer/phone)
On an Arabic keyboard:
- أ = (Shift + H on Mac/PC Arabic keyboard)
- ن = (on the K key)
- To type the shaddah ( ـّ ), press Shift + ~ (on most Arabic layouts).
Typed together → أنَّ
Technical Note
- The shaddah ( ـّ ) on the letter ن means you double the sound of the n.
- Without the shaddah: أن (an).
- With the shaddah: أنَّ (anna).
In the Shahadah, we always pronounce it with the shaddah: أشهد أنَّ (ash-hadu anna).
Summary
Now you can:
- Say it: anna
- Write it: أنَّ
- Type it: أنَّ
This tiny word, with its doubled n sound, links the first two words of the testimony together.
